Common Fall Plumbing Maintenance Items

September 2nd, 2017

As the weather slowly begins to cool and the summer heat melts away, fall is clearly making its way in. This is the last chance for home and business owners to handle various maintenance and upkeep tasks before the cold winter hits, and a particularly important area here is plumbing.

At Expert Services- Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electrical, we have plumbers on hand to help with any and all fall plumbing services your home or business may be in need of. Let’s look at some of the most common areas that need to be tracked this time of year, and offer a few additional tips.

Water Heater Maintenance

The water heater should be well maintained throughout the year, with at least once annual maintenance scheduled. Fall can be a particularly good time to have this done – identifying leaks or any overuse issues that are plaguing the heater is better now, before winter hits. That way, if there are any problems, you have the time to correct them before doing so becomes more of a hassle. In addition, these kinds of regular checks can spot inefficiencies that may be costing you money on your utility bill.

Garden Hoses and Hose Bibs

One of the most important areas of fall plumbing maintenance actually involves outdoor areas. Too many people fail to adequately empty and store hoses and hose bibs over the winter, possibly leading to standing water and frozen pipes or hoses. Be sure to disconnect the hose and fully drain all remaining water, then store it somewhere that won’t reach freezing temperatures over the winter.

Also be sure to turn off the hose bib, a connector piece, plus the inside water supply line. If you have any issues with this procedure, our plumbers can offer tips.

Previous Sewer Issues

If you’ve had any recent issues to any part of your sewer system, it can be a good idea to have a professional inspection done. Fall and winter strain the sewer system, and an inspection will ensure there are no glaring issues before they get started.

Sump Pump

As precipitation rises, so does the usage necessary for the sump pump. Before the winter snowfall begins, make sure that everything is in order with your sump pump.
